The trouble with storm damage is that most of it does not look like anything from the ground. Wind lifts and creases shingles and they lie back down looking sealed when they are not, and hail bruises the mat underneath the granules without breaking the surface, so a roof can be genuinely damaged and look completely normal from your driveway. Ice dams do their damage under the shingles at the eave rather than on top of them. If you have had a real storm, the useful thing is to get someone up there and get it documented, because most policies have a deadline for reporting damage and it is a lot shorter than people expect.
